With high-quality online tutoring now widely accessible across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, the debate has intensified. Here is what the data from our own students tells us.
The rise of online tutoring has opened up access to quality education in cities and towns across India where premium offline tutors were previously unavailable. But is it as effective?
The Case for Online Tutoring
Students in Aligarh, Moradabad, Agra, and across Uttar Pradesh can now access IIT-graduate tutors who they could never reach offline. This access alone is transformative.
Our platform data shows no significant difference in grade improvement between online and offline students. A student in Aligarh working with an IIT Bombay-graduate Physics tutor online achieves comparable outcomes to a student in a metro working offline.
Online sessions also allow screen sharing, digital whiteboard collaboration, and session recording — tools that often enhance the learning experience.
The Case for Offline Tutoring
Younger students (Classes 1-7) often benefit from the physical presence of a tutor. The relational dimension of learning — being physically in the same room — can help build rapport and focus.
Some students are also easily distracted during online sessions due to household noise, phone notifications, or internet instability.
Our Recommendation
For Classes 8 and above, online tutoring is equally effective and significantly more accessible. For younger students, try online first; switch to offline if engagement is consistently low.
